Rae Dunn - Turning small batch charm into mass appeal
Scaling an artisan brand into a $300M lifestyle powerhouse
The Challenge
In 2003, Magenta discovered Rae Dunn, a gifted ceramic artist, at a craft show in Palo Alto. At the time, Rae was handcrafting every piece herself. Her pottery had a loyal following among design lovers, but the challenge was scaling her “imperfectly perfect” style for a wider audience without smoothing out the quirks that made it so special. To grow the brand, without losing the soul.

The Concept
In 2004, Magenta launched a high-end Rae Dunn gift collection, designed to translate her handmade charm into a format fit for broader retail. By partnering with premium stores like Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel, we positioned the line as a boutique offering, distributed exclusively through brick-and-mortar and specialty channels. This created a halo effect, building brand prestige while forming emotional connections with a much larger audience.
The Creation
We studied Rae’s organic forms, tactile glazes and handwritten lettering to develop techniques that preserved their charm at scale. Samples were sent to our artisan partners to replicate the subtle details, and, for authenticity, each production mold began as a handmade piece. Her signature handwriting was recreated using methods based on her original files. Rae herself has remained closely involved throughout our journey together, personally ensuring her vision has stayed intact, from first sketch to final shelf.

Commercialization
After building Rae Dunn into a specialty favorite, Magenta scaled the brand to mass retail, carefully preserving its artisanal feel. We expanded into new categories including candles, garden, pet, baby and beauty, growing Rae Dunn into a $300M lifestyle brand. In 2023, Magenta signed major licensing deals with Disney, Warner Bros., and Peanuts, marrying Rae’s aesthetic with pop-culture icons and showcasing our ability to blend handmade sensibility and commercial scale.
“I first met with Magenta in 2003 and we have been working closely ever since. They are a highly collaborative company that focuses on the artist as well as the customer. By partnering with them, my brand has grown and expanded substantially. The talented, creative, and dedicated team at Magenta has been a joy to work with. They bring my visions into reality with their keen understanding of housewares and good design. Magenta has been a true partner and we have built a unique and strong relationship together. Working with them feels more like a family than a business.”
