Melissa Koby - translating art into retail

Scaling artist-led design into a sustainable retail program

The Challenge

The Melissa Koby collection celebrates natural, handcrafted artistry, with each piece designed to feel distinctive and authentic. When we launched the debut series with World Market in late 2021, the pieces combined natural brown clay with multiple hand-painted colors and wax-resist finishes. This approach, while visually striking, presented significant production challenges. The combination of complex hand-paint techniques, brown clay, and satin finishes created a delicate balance that made maintaining consistency and quality difficult at scale. To preserve the collection’s artisanal integrity while meeting market demand, we needed to find a production approach that maintained the uniqueness of the design without compromising on durability or finish quality.

The Concept

Jamaican-born artist Melissa Koby's work explores themes of identity, nature and resilience. We created a collection that stayed true to her voice while reaching broader audiences. Our goal was to honor the soulful, empowering essence of her illustrations and translate them into a curated line of ceramic goods with the scale and accessibility needed for retail success. We intentionally partnered with World Market, a national retailer that values artistry and purpose, ensuring the collection launched in a setting that highlights both integrity and global design appeal.

The Creation

To address the production complexities while preserving the collection’s artisanal character, we reimagined our manufacturing approach. In 2022, we transitioned key designs to decal-based techniques and introduced a glossy finish, retaining the exposed brown clay accents to preserve the handcrafted feel. At the same time, we expanded into Candle and Garden categories using stoneware that replicated the natural clay look while improving consistency. By 2023, we applied stoneware with a faux exposed clay technique to the tabletop line, allowing us to maintain the collection’s distinctive aesthetic while optimizing for production. That same year, we successfully extended Melissa Koby into wall décor (non-ceramic), which was well-received by the market and quickly reordered by World Market.

Beyond tabletop, we extended the collection into new categories like candles, garden décor, and wall art. Each extension required thoughtful reinterpretation of Melissa’s visual language across different substrates, ensuring continuity of style while exploring fresh ways to tell her story.

Commercialization

The launch at World Market showed that we delivered again, with the mug reordered more than five times. This consistent sell-through over multiple years highlights the strength of blending visual storytelling with thoughtfully designed, emotionally resonant products. Building on that sustained success, the collection expanded into garden and wall décor, demonstrating Magenta’s ability to grow artist-led designs into sustainable, long-term retail programs.
