From a $5.99 Mug to The Kwendy Home

We are excited to share that Magenta and The Kwendy Home have been featured in Home Furnishings News (HFN) in a story exploring the unexpected journey behind The Kwendy Home by Magenta collection.

Titled How a $5.99 mug helped turn Kwendy Home into a brand,” the feature by HFN Editor in Chief Allison Zisko takes readers back to where Wendy Lau's love of ceramics began and follows the full-circle story that eventually brought her together with Magenta to create a collection of her own.

It is a story about ceramics, community, seasonal decorating, and the power of finding something that simply feels like you.

It Started With a $5.99 Mug

More than a decade ago, Wendy discovered two chunky ceramic mugs at HomeGoods. They were simple, affordable, and felt good in her hands. At the time, she was on what she describes as a “shoestring budget.”

“I had $50 a month at my disposal to spend. And I chose to spend it on home décor.”

Those two mugs sparked a passion for collecting that would eventually grow into Kwendy Home, a community of more than one million followers, and ultimately a brand of Wendy's own.

There is something especially fitting about where that story began. The mugs Wendy fell in love with were produced by Magenta.

A Full-Circle Collaboration

Wendy's passion for ceramics eventually evolved beyond collecting. Through Kwendy Home, she began sharing how she styled her home, renovated her space, and combined different design influences to create a look that felt uniquely hers.

When Magenta approached Wendy about developing a collection together, the opportunity brought that original connection full circle.

“I built this aesthetic through Magenta. If you look at my page, I think I have interwoven my DNA with their philosophy.”

And her reaction to the opportunity says it all:

“C’mon, when Magenta comes knocking, my goosebumps went up. How exciting is that to be given that opportunity?”

For Magenta, the collaboration offered an opportunity to translate Wendy's distinctive point of view and connection with her audience into a collection designed for the way people actually decorate and live.

Designing for the Joy of the Season

The Kwendy Home by Magenta collection launched with a Halloween assortment across approximately 2,500 HomeGoods, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx stores.

Seasonal decorating has long been part of Wendy's approach to creating a home. Rather than completely transforming a space, she sees seasonal pieces as small opportunities to make a familiar home feel new again.

“How do you fall in love with your home again and again?” Wendy asks.

For her, the answer is seasonal décor.

“It’s this bite-sized piece of joy people can take home.”

That idea became central to the collection. Inspired by the vintage ceramic villages of the past, the assortment brings a sense of storytelling and whimsy to everyday tabletop pieces, from haunted house mugs and tea-for-one sets to kitchen canisters and salt and pepper shakers.

For those who prefer a less traditional take on Halloween, a second assortment explores moon, stars, and mystical oddities in shades of robin’s egg blue and purple.

From Collecting to Creating

One of the most meaningful aspects of The Kwendy Home collaboration is the connection Wendy has built with the people who follow her.

Wendy has spent years talking directly with consumers about their homes, their collections, and the pieces they want to see. That perspective became an important part of the design process.

“I have a unique position in that I talk to consumers directly,” Wendy told HFN. “When I speak to the Magenta team, I feel I am voicing everyone else’s desires, what they want to see on shelves.”

She describes that relationship in a way that feels perfectly Kwendy:

“It’s like talking to your girlfriends, it really is.”

That direct connection gives Wendy an understanding of what resonates with her community, while Magenta brings its experience in product development, manufacturing, and bringing design concepts to retail at scale.

Together, the partnership creates a bridge between creator insight and product design.

A New Chapter for Magenta

The Kwendy Home collaboration also represents an exciting new direction for Magenta.

Our partnership with Wendy expands beyond traditional licensing into the creator space, bringing together her authentic point of view and community with Magenta's expertise in developing and producing tabletop collections.

That philosophy is at the heart of what makes the Kwendy Home collaboration so special.

What began with a pair of $5.99 mugs eventually became a creative partnership, a new collection, and a full-circle moment for Wendy and Magenta.

We are proud to see that story recognized by Home Furnishings News and grateful to HFN for highlighting the people, ideas, and history behind the collection.
