Disney Greetings From: Designing a Disney Collection People Want to Collect

What if Disney's most beloved worlds were treated like travel destinations?
That question sparked the Disney Greetings From collection, a series of mugs inspired by travel memorabilia, destination postcards, and the souvenirs people collect to remember places they've loved.
In this collection, every mug is designed like a postcard from a destination that exists somewhere between memory, imagination, and storytelling.
More importantly, every mug was designed to feel like part of a larger journey.
Why travel became the foundation
The idea for Greetings From started with an observation from Magenta designer Jess.
She found herself fascinated by the kinds of products people collect over time. Travel mugs lined across shelves. Postcards tucked into memory boxes. Souvenirs that serve as reminders of places people love and experiences they want to revisit.
"I was seeing photos and videos online of these huge collections people had built. There was something compelling about the formula. A consistent mug form, a recognizable illustration style, a focused color palette, and a system that could expand almost endlessly while still feeling cohesive."
At the same time, another source of inspiration caught her attention while exploring design trends in Japan: interactive ink stamps that overlap and interact with postage marks to create small moments of surprise and storytelling.
Those two ideas began to merge.

Travel memorabilia has always been tied to memory, escapism, and the emotional connection people have with meaningful places. Disney offered a natural extension of that concept because its characters already belong to worlds people know by heart.
As Jess puts it:
"Disney also has a world of characters that live in places near and far. Stitch lives in Hawaii. Remy lives in Paris. Pooh lives in the Hundred Acre Wood. It felt like a perfect fit to have Disney characters interact with postage stamps that tell their stories."
That insight became the foundation for Greetings From.
Rather than designing around individual characters, the collection was built around destinations. Each mug would feel like a postcard from a place the customer had “visited” through Disney storytelling.
From sketch to collectible system
Jess's earliest sketches focused on a single goal: telling a complete story around the iconic Rae Dunn elongated mug.
The concept quickly evolved beyond surface decoration.
The postage stamps became raised-relief elements that added dimension and texture to the mug itself. What began as an illustration concept became part of the physical form, helping establish a recognizable framework that could expand across multiple Disney properties while maintaining consistency from mug to mug.

That consistency is what makes collectible programs work.
Customers recognize the format immediately, while each destination introduces new artwork, colors, characters, and details to discover. The system stays familiar, but the storytelling remains fresh.
The details collectors notice
The strongest collectible programs reward a closer look.
On the Hundred Acre Wood mug, custom postage stamps feature Pooh and his friends alongside travel-inspired illustrations and seasonal details. A hidden North Pole postmark appears among the artwork, turning the beloved setting into a holiday destination worth revisiting.
The Paris mug tells a completely different story. Remy and Emile appear in custom illustrations created specifically for the collection, including a scene of the brothers sharing hot cocoa on a snowy day. The artwork, color palette, and stamp details all work together to evoke the feeling of winter in Paris.
Every character and secondary icon throughout the collection was redrawn in Rae Dunn's signature illustration style rather than pulled directly from existing Disney artwork. This allowed the team to create new poses, new interactions, and storytelling moments designed specifically for the Greetings From concept.

Even the interior mug details serve a purpose. Hidden postmarks tucked inside each mug create small moments of discovery that collectors encounter long after the product leaves the shelf.
These are the kinds of details that transform a mug from a product into something people want to examine, display, gift, and collect.
Why collectability matters
Collectability isn't just a design strategy. It's a retail strategy.
When customers see a collection as something they can build over time, a purchase becomes the beginning of a journey rather than the end of one.
Every new destination creates an opportunity for expansion. Every character introduces another story to tell. Every release feels connected to the larger world while offering something new to discover.
For retailers, that creates stronger engagement and repeat purchase behavior. For collectors, it creates the excitement of finding the next destination to add to the shelf.
The Takeaway
We're constantly looking beyond what's already on the shelf and asking what could make a product feel more meaningful, more memorable, and more emotionally connected to the person bringing it home. Sometimes that comes through a new technique. Sometimes it's an unexpected form. And sometimes it's a fresh way of telling a familiar story.
For retailers, those ideas create differentiation in increasingly crowded categories. For consumers, they create products that feel personal, collectible, and worth returning to.
The Disney Greetings From collection is one example of that approach. A familiar mug becomes a travel keepsake. A licensed collection becomes a destination-based experience. A product becomes something that sparks nostalgia, curiosity, and connection every time it's picked up.
Because great design isn't just about how something looks. It's about how it makes people feel, the memories it unlocks, and the stories they want to keep building long after they bring it home.
At Magenta, that's the opportunity we're always chasing: turning everyday products into experiences people connect with, collect, and remember.
