A Day with Rae: Finding Inspiration in Nature, Curiosity, and What's Next

This past May, Magenta's Design Team traveled to Berkeley for something we always look forward to: time with Rae Dunn.

After more than three decades of partnership, these visits remain one of the most valuable parts of our creative process. They give us the opportunity to step away from trend reports, product reviews, and development calendars and spend time where so many ideas begin: in Rae's world.

This visit was no exception.

Alongside Rae and her beloved dog Midge, our team spent the day exploring her studio, discussing new concepts, reviewing works in progress, and talking about the future evolution of the Rae Dunn brand.

What stood out most wasn't a specific sketch or product idea.

It was the reminder that nature continues to sit at the center of Rae's creative practice.

The Original Inspiration Is Still the Strongest One

Walking through Rae's studio feels a little like stepping into a natural history collection assembled by an artist.

Tables were covered with found objects gathered over time. Branches. Seed pods. Stones. Shells. Weathered pieces of wood. Tiny treasures collected on walks and travels that many people might pass by without a second glance.

To Rae, they're sources of endless inspiration.

Their shapes, textures, imperfections, and quiet beauty show up throughout her work. They influence the forms she gravitates toward, the motifs she sketches, and the sense of warmth and authenticity that has become synonymous with the Rae Dunn brand.

It's a perspective that has remained remarkably consistent throughout her career.

While trends evolve, colors shift, and categories expand, the foundation of Rae's creative process remains rooted in observation and curiosity.

The natural world continues to provide more ideas than any trend forecast ever could.

Looking Forward While Staying True to the Brand

Of course, the visit wasn't only about reflection.

A significant part of our time together was spent discussing what's next.

The Design Team shared new concepts, reviewed upcoming opportunities, and explored ways the brand can continue to evolve while remaining unmistakably Rae.

Those conversations are an important part of what makes the partnership successful.

Consumers recognize Rae Dunn products because they feel authentic. That authenticity doesn't happen by accident. It comes from maintaining an ongoing creative dialogue, ensuring new ideas remain connected to the values and artistic perspective that made the brand resonate in the first place.

As the brand continues to grow into new categories, collections, and collaborations, those conversations become even more important.

Why Studio Visits Matter

In product development, it's easy to focus on timelines, samples, approvals, and production schedules.

Studio visits remind us that every successful product begins with something much simpler: inspiration.

For Rae, that inspiration often starts outdoors. A walk. A found object. A shape worth studying. A texture worth remembering.

For our team, seeing that process firsthand provides context that no mood board or creative brief can fully capture.

It helps us better understand the perspective behind the products and ultimately build collections that feel true to the artist, true to the consumer, and true to the brand.

The Takeaway

One of the reasons the Rae Dunn brand continues to resonate with consumers is that it has never chased trends for the sake of novelty.

Instead, it has remained grounded in something more enduring: curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the beauty found in everyday objects.

Our May visit to Berkeley was a reminder of that philosophy.

It was an opportunity to reconnect with the creative source behind the brand, explore new ideas together, and gather inspiration for the collections still to come.

Because while products may begin on a sketchpad, many of the best ideas start much earlier, with a walk through nature, a curious eye, and the willingness to notice something others might overlook.
